Steamer & Station 65th Birthday Celebration

Titus the Tiger and friends

Dozens of Friends came together June 20 at the Zoo Railway's now-closed Washington Park Station to celebrate the debut, 65 years ago, of the station and the steam locomotive Oregon. On June 20, 1959, the locomotive left the brand new station for its first public run around the Oregon Centennial Expo, located where the Expo Center is today. That fall, when the expo closed, the station was moved to its current location near the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park, and the locomotive began running on tracks from the zoo to the park. The tracks are there still and in good shape. Friends of the Washington Park and Zoo Railway are working to persuade the zoo, Metro and the City of Portland to make some necessary repairs and restore the run from the zoo to the Rose Garden, which has been closed since 2013.

Local news media came out to report on the event, including KPTV Channel 12.
