The Plan
The Plan: Restore the Rose Garden Loop
Since 1958, The Washington Park Zoo Railway transported millions of riders between the International Rose Test Gardens and the Oregon Zoo.
In 2013, the entire railway was shut down during exhibit construction at the zoo. When the route through the zoo came back online in 2014, Metro made the decision not to reopen the full line to the Rose Garden.
What used to be a beautiful, 30 minute journey is now a short 6 minute lap.
Now, community support is building for full restoration of the historic railway line, and we have a strong case.
We’re making progress…
In the past two years, we talked with Oregon Zoo, Metro, and Portland City officials about bringing back the Rose Garden Loop. Recent studies show it's practical, cost-effective, and the responsible choice.
